  • Literacy Connection Program Assistant/Learner Assessor

    The Literacy Connection
    Job Description
    General Function:
    • Conduct intake, assessment and orientation of adult learners 
    • Provide learner communication and support
    Specific Duties: 
    • Accept or respond to referrals and inquiries from prospective learners
    • Provide prospective learners with overview of program services
    • Determine if prospective learners are appropriate for the organization
    • Refer learners to other literacy providers or social service agencies as appropriate
    • Enter initial intake data from appropriate prospective learners into waiting list
    • Coordinate and conduct pre-testing and post-testing of learners
    • Conduct orientations to explain learner expectations and requirements
    • Create files for new learners who are ready to be matched
    • Communicate with waitlisted and prospective learners to determine status
    • Answer telephones, respond to inquiries and take messages
    • Communicate with Program Coordinator regarding record keeping, scheduling of activities, matching suggestions, and learner activities
    • Gather required data for reporting
    • Manage updates to learner or tutor contact information and status changes
    • Assist Program Coordinator with telephone calls, filing and clerical duties 

    Occasional Duties:
    • Assist with planning recognition activities for tutors and learners
    • Assist with agency fundraisers as directed 

    Qualifications:
    • English oral and written proficiency required
    • Spanish oral and written proficiency required
    • High School diploma or equivalent, some college preferred
    • Sensitivity to the needs of adult learners
    • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet and database use
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Must drive a car, have a valid driver’s license and have valid insurance 

    Knowledge/Skills    
    • Ability to serve as liaison between Literacy Connection, learners and tutors
    • Ability to use computer equipment, printer and software for daily tasks
    • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and the public to achieve the agency’s goals
    • Ability to adjust work schedule to meet the demands of the position (including occasional nights and weekends)
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
    • Ability to make maximum use of work time and prioritize assignments 

    Tools/Equipment
    • Computer with mouse, copy machine, fax machine, printer, telephone, calculator 

    Physical Demands/Work Environment
    • Involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods
    • Must have own transportation to offsite locations
    • Must be able to lift and carry testing materials, books or small equipment
    • For learner assessment purposes, the ability to give and receive detailed information through oral/aural English communication by giving clear spoken instructions, asking questions, and judging responses based on pronunciation and language use. 
    Monday & Wednesday, 9am - 4pm, with occasional weekday evening flexibility.
